Summary: "Kimono Refashioned explores the impact of kimono on the world of fashion from the 1870s to now. Featuring works from the renowned Kyoto Costume Institute, it includes Japanese and Western designs, men's and women's apparel, and both exacting and impressionistic references to kimono. Kimono has influenced global fashion since Japan opened to the world in the late nineteenth century. Motifs used to decorate kimono, its form and silhouette, and its two-dimensional structure and linear cut have all been refashioned into a wide array of garments. Kimono revealed new possibilities in clothing design and helped to lay the foundations of contemporary clothing. Six essays from experts in the field discuss Japan's impact on international fashion. Four catalogue sections explore early examples of the influence of kimono; Japonism in fashion from the late nineteenth century to the 1920s; contemporary fashion and its use of kimono's flatness, silhouette, weave, dyeing, and decoration; and how Japan continues to inspire the world of fashion through its incorporation of popular design, including manga and anime"-- Provided by publisher.
