Material type: TextTextSeries: The Japan architect, 9, .9Publication details: Tokyo; Shinkenchiku-Sha; 1993.Description: 256 p. : ill. (chiefly col.), plans, ports. ; 30 cmSubject(s): DDC classification:

Summary: The competition brief, written by judge and architect Rem Koolhaas (founder of OMA), was a critique of contemporary architecture in the early 1990s. Koolhaas lamented the "overwhelming addiction to form, style, aesthetics, that in itself really represents a disease." He challenged young architects to shed all that was "frivolous, decorative, and showy" and focus instead on exploring new content by designing a house with "massive constraints" and a "characterless" approach. The title "House with NO STYLE" was a deliberate negation, urging entrants to interrupt the "narcissistic automatism of form-making."
